Margaret (Peggy) Ann (Mullen) Schmid of Rochester Hills, MI slipped from the earthly arms of her beloved family on April 29, 2023 peacefully with her husband and daughter by her side. She was the first born of Tom and Peggy Mullen and the big sister to Marilyn Mullen of Bronx, NY.
Peggy was a proud New Yorker and equally as proud of her 16 year Catholic education. She was Jesuit educated from Boston College School of Nursing and graduated with Honors in 1970. As an RNBS, Peggy worked primarily in acute care settings and was an educator in the nursing field. In her final days at Ascension Hospital in Rochester, MI, she received the utmost nursing care and dignity from her Hospice care team who helped both Peggy and her most concerned family.
While attending Boston College, she met the love of her life Peter A. Schmid of Syracuse, NY. Peter was recruited to Boston College and was coached by the famous Bob Cousy. In his Senior year, Peter became the Captain of the Boston College men's basketball team. After graduation, Peter and Peggy married on September 29, 1973 at St. Raymond Roman Catholic Church in Parkchester, New York. Their sacred and lasting union of nearly 50 years created their fantastic daughter, Erica (Schmid) MacInnes of Wellesley, MA.
Many years later, her daughter added to their great family, by marrying her son-in-law, Travis L. MacInnes of Berkley, MI in Boston in September 2002. Their partnership blessed the family with two outstanding grandchildren, Ieva Taylor (14 yrs) and Bryce Thomas (11 yrs) MacInnes. She affectionately called her family, "The 6 Amigos", enjoying many laughs and treasured memories, most especially during the Christmas holidays spent in Boston, during Erica's consecutive running of the Boston Marathon and of course our summers spent together at the beach house along the Atlantic Ocean in Rye Beach, NH. Always having great fun together, playing games and living life to its fullest! This was Peggy. Peggy had a dry and quick sense of humor. Her 'signature' was usually, 'I love you more' and "xoxoxo."
When family was home over any holiday, it looked like a Macy's department store with all the extensive decorations. She was a keen 'trouble shooter' who questioned everything, being a natural, Devils' Advocate. At the same time she was a consoling and empathic friend, sister, wife and mother.
Peg was often thought of by others as being a high profile person yet her final wishes were to have a low profile passing. Thus, as she wished, there will be no formal funeral services or the gift of flowers in Michigan or NH. She will be flown to her final resting place alongside her parents at Mt. Calvary Mausoleum in Manchester, NH. As most knew, her love of equines was only surpassed by her love for her wonderful family and so many lifelong dear friends. Horses were a source of joy and strength for Peggy.
Those who wish to honor the beautiful life and memory of Peggy Mullen Schmid, may choose to make a memorial contribution to her favorite horse rescue, Horses' Haven in Howell, MI. Peggy and Peter have supported and volunteered many hours at Horses' Haven for over two decades. Contributions may be made online at https://www.horseshaven.org/how-can-i-help1.html
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.McHughFuneralHome.com for the Schmid family.
