Raymond Lucien Lamy, 85, of Placentia, CA went to be with our Lord in “That Great Post Office in the Sky” on August 30, 2021, after battling both COPD, despite never smoking, and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born on May 1, 1936, he was the son of the late Lucien Lamy and Germaine Duval.
A proud French-Canadian, he would speak French to anyone and everyone who could “parlez-vous”. He was raised by his paternal grandmother, and attended Catholic schools in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire, graduating from Bishop Bradley High School in 1955. Shortly after high school, Raymond joined the Air Guards, serving six years before being Honorably Discharged.
He was married to Mary-Lee (née Sweeney) for almost twenty-five years, and raised two daughters: Nancy-Lee and Angela. Because he worked nights for the US Postal Service as a Mail Handler, for a whopping 56 years (!), he was able to participate with their activities during their childhood. Ray would coach their softball teams, and he was found in the stands of their soccer, basketball or swim matches.
He was also a proud Girl Scout Cookie Dad for many years, and attended their band and choir concerts and art shows. He spoke fondly of “taking his girls down to the Berry Street” where they would pick blueberries to bring home. (Not many berries made it home). He also enjoyed going to car museums and car shows with them.
He would later work alongside his daughter, Nancy-Lee, and then with his grandson, Ryan, at the Manchester Post Office, where Ray considered it “The Family Business”.
Sadly, Mary-Lee passed away, and Ray married Marion. Every week, Ray and Marion would go dancing at the VFW (Sweeney Post), Mount Royal and Circle Club National. They also attended numerous Knights of Columbus Council 92 events and volunteered for their charities, as Ray was both a Third and a Fourth Degree Knight. They would take their fifth-wheel up through Canada during the summer and visit every year the same campground in Newfoundland to see their friends of many years. They attended Nancy-Lee’s children’s soccer and school events as well as attending local parades.
After Marion passed, and his Alzheimer’s started to take a grip, Ray retired, and went to live with Angela in California, where he immersed himself into the community. He joined the local Knights of Columbus, and attended weekly mass at St. Joseph Church, receiving Holy Eucharist from Angela or listening to her read the Word of God at mass. After mass, he would have a donut and chat with the priests, deacons, parishioners and anybody who looked like they needed a smile. He was heavily involved with his grand-daughter, Noëlle’s life and happily attended every event she had, as well as being the inspiration for her Girl Scout Gold Award.
His daily favorite thing to do during the week was see his friends at the Yorba Linda Senior Center, where he was a regular volunteer, and earned recognition awards. He enjoyed spending time with his favorite friend, Pat, and they were soon known as “The Two Peas in a Pod”. They played cards, walked in the park and enjoyed lunch together, until her passing this past July.
Raymond is survived by his two daughters: Nancy-Lee (Deb Anderson) Harding and Angela (David) Lamy Fischer. Three grandchildren: Ryan Harding, Katharine-Lee (Tim) LaRochelle and Noëlle Fischer. Three great-grand-daughters: Cecilia-Lee, Lydia and Winifred LaRochelle. Ray was pre-deceased by a younger brother, André, has two sisters, Georgette (John pre-deceased) Lyons and Camè (Chris) Paras. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, God-children, Step Children: Bobby (Karleen) Mason, Brenda (Jim) Warwick and Monica Hamilton and “Honorary Daughters”.
A service by Reverend Anselm Smedile from Saint Raphael Parish will be held on Wednesday September 29 at 4:00PM, followed by visitation until 7:00PM at the McHugh Funeral Home, 283 Hanover Street Manchester, NH. Military Honors, Committal Prayers and Burial will take place on Thursday, September 30 at 11:00AM at St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford, NH.
