Fredric Dean Lewis, age 74, of Toms River, New Jersey passed away on Monday, September 20, 2021. Fred was born May 22, 1947 in Utica, New York, and grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he attended Enloe High School and played football with his childhood friend Oliver Vanderbilt Frady III, a period of time Freddy loved to share. He served in United State Air force in Vietnam from 1966-1968. Fred worked for the Manchester Police Dept. from 1972-1994 and retired in 1994 as Patrol Lieutenant.
In August of 1986 the original Manchester Township Emergency Response /team (Mert) was an eight man team founded by Lt. Fred Lewis. The eight man team attended Basic Swat School at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover New Jersey in October of 1986. The MERT Team conducted its first operation in January of 1987. Over the next 18 plus years the MERT team went through various phases of regionalization and shared services along with municipal S.W.A.T. Teams in Ocean County. Fred was the Firearm instructor (Range Master) for over 20+years for the Ocean County Police Academy. He loved his Dallas Cowboys football team and was an avid Golfer and loved being a member of the Golfing family who play at Pine Ridge Golf Course in the Lakehurst Blitz. Some of his favorite sayings were: layer it up; the man…the myth…the legend; yo broooo; and half man-half amazing. Fred always loved to dance and thought he was the next Elvis with his moves, but what Fred loved the most was Laura and his family.
Predeceased by his Mother and Father Annie Lou Haskins Lewis and Walter Carswell Lewis, Fred is survived by his devoted wife Laura M. Lewis, his sister Laura Lewis Lightbourne Upchurch, of Raleigh, NC and brother Wade Clark Lewis (E.W Fulcher) of Raleigh, NC, his sons Jon Lewis (Tammy) Texas, Tom Lewis (Jill) New Jersey, Sharon Ann Bryant, South Carolina, his step children: Cheri Shefler (Steve Smykla) Lanoka Harbor, NJ and Daniel Guerrieri (Laurie Ann) Bordentown, NJ, his grandchildren: Elyce, Richie, Lucy, Nadia, Daniel, Gabby, Jacob, Zack, Emily and Jarret and his beloved dog Lucy.
Fredric met the love of his life Laura in 1993 where their love continued to grow for the past 28 years making beautiful memories that will forever live on.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation for Fredric on Monday, September 27, 2021 from 3 to 6 pm at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 3010 Ridgeway Road, Manchester, NJ 08759. A Celebration of Fred's Life will follow the visitation at The Amvets Post No. 2, 1290 Toms River Road, Jackson, NJ 08527. If you will be attending the service at the cemetery, please be at the funeral home ay 12:30 pm. A service with military honors will be held t 2 pm, Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at the Brig. General William C. Doyle Veteran Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Road, Wrightstown, NJ 08562.
