
Visitation and funeral services will be held 4-8p m, December 20, 2023, at the Thomas L Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Drive, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. Eastern Star Services will be at 7:00 pm followed by Masonic Service at 7:30 pm. Entombment will take place at 11 am (please be arrive at the funeral home at 10 am), on Thursday December 21, 2023, at the Ocean County Memorial Park (Waretown), 280 Wells Mills Road, Waretown, NJ 08758.
John was born in Neptune, NJ, to Lucy and Milton Carter on July 18th, 1946, and attended school in Wanamassa, NJ.
John graduated from Asbury Park High School John was inducted into the United States Marine Corps serving in Viet Nam War in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regimen (2/7) of the 1st Marine Division. He achieved the rank of Corporal and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (with 2nd award), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and later awarded Viet Nam Service Medal and Distinguished Service Medal by the State of New Jersey.
He was married to Judith Conrad on August 9, 1969, in Howell, NJ.
John worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 before retiring after a 50 Year career.
He became a Master Mason and a member of the Mariners Lodge #150, serving as Worshipful Master in 1983 and 1996.
John is a Past Grand Senior Stewart of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey, also served as Worthy Patron of Bethlehem, Chapter #40, Order of the Eastern Star in 1983 and in 1992. John proudly served as the Most Worthy Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star in 1996-1997 and was also a member of Molly Pitcher, Chapter #198 of Order of the Eastern Star in Freehold, NJ.
He loved fishing, winning the slots at casinos, taking cruises and spending time with his granddaughters.
John is preceded in death by his parents Lucy and Milton Carter and survived by His wife Judy, and two sons, Scott E. Carter, and Jimmy Carter. His granddaughters Kiersten E. Carter and Makenna P. Carter and (6) siblings- Milton Carter, South Amboy, New Jersey; Jacquline Carter, Ocala Florida; Joseph Carter, North Carolina; James Carter, New Jersey; Jill Carter, New Jersey and Raymond Carter, South Carolina.
