It's been nearly 2 years since you've been gone.  I miss you every day so much.  I still pick up the phone to call you before I remember.  Mom, you were my strenght.  You made me want to succeed.  The family moves through each day.  We have continued our lives.  But not one of us is the same since you have gone.  We love you and miss you.  Please watch over us from your heavenly home as you did while on earth.

I had the pleasure of meeting Donna through her husband, Bill Hartnett, when he was a state representative.  What struck me was how devoted both Bill and Donna were to each other. During the years that followed, in most conversations I had with Bill, he would mention Donna.  His eyes would always brighten at the mention of her name.  Clearly, she was his beloved and best friend.  I know he and the children will miss her so.  My deepest sympathy to the family.

I am so sorry to hear about Donna's passing. I only met Donna once, but I have seen and worked with her influence many, many times.  How is that you ask  It was whenever I worked with you and talked with you.  You have accomplished so many wonderful, great and lasting things from NC State, CHAP and throughout the State.  I know that it was Donna that put that service spirit into you and molded you in those early years of marriage into that person you are today.  I always try to remember that the woman behind the man is far greater.  It was only two weeks ago that I made another connection with a member of your familty, your son, Tim.  Many years ago I purchased a brown used van from Harris Chev in Ashland.  A young salesman named Tim worked with me.  He asked, do you want to buy the van  I said yes, except I don't know if it will fit in my garage.  He said, lets drive it to Mansfield and find out.  Well, we did, it fit and we bought it. Now remember this was many years ago.  In the summer of 2007 I was looking for a new car.  It was going to be a Toyota Carolla or a Honda Accord.  I went to Graham and a now slightly older salesman helped me.  He looked familiar.  I'll be if it was not Tim who sold me the brown van.  He was extremely helpful and I worked with him on about four visits.  In the end he told me that he could see that the Carolla did not offer me the knee room I needed and that on a long trip I would feel the space problem.  He suggested either going to the Camary or stick with my other choice, the Accord.  He got me the best price he could on a used Accord, but I could get a new one for just $800 more because of the end of the year closeout.  Again, no connection.  Two weeks ago I went to Graham to see Tim my daughter might be looking for a Carolla.  When I asked for him I was told he was out today and was with his Dad Bill.  I said Bill, Bill Harnett the past legislator.  They said yes.  That was the first time I knew I was working with your son even though you both look alike in many ways.  Well, it is obvious to me, that Donna's influence on Tim was just as much and might actually have been more.  What a super person to work with.  So, Donna continues to live on.  My sister died of the same cancer Donna had.  She passed away when she was seven and it has been close to 45 years ago now.  She was ill for about 18 months and I remember the ups and downs, the hopes and then the fears, the joys and the saddness.  It is still hard to look and think back, but in time it gets easier once we see our loved ones lasting effects on us.  I wish you and your family that peace.

A great memory comes to mind when Donna and her sister Bev brought old family photo's to surprise Marylou for her 60th birthday, Donna's Hor Dourves and presentation were amazing! Her wit, spirit sense of interior design will never leave me; she left the most touching impression of 'welcome' and we wish her peace.

To Bi,, Cathy, Tim, and all the family:

I have known your family since 1965, when we moved to Ashland.  I always liked all of you so much.  Kathy, we were classmates since 3rd grade, and still enjoy seeing each other at reunions.
Bill, you were my junior high principal, and I thought so much of you!  I still continued to see you at various functions, and even at Ron Marquette's calling hours.

Tim, you probably don't remember the Deweys too much, but we always knew who you were and I even have kept track of you as you have grown up.

Amy, I don't think you know us too well, but we thought so much of your family.

I thought Donna was so pretty and kind.  She kept you five kids in line at church in a loving way.

I know she is with Danny and your other brother/son Michael, now in heaven.

Please know that you are in my prayers, and Cathy, I hope to see you at our reunion.

I am unable to attend the services for Donna.  I shall always remember her warm and friendly smile, even when she was first diagnosed with cancer.  My deepest condolences to the family.
