Evelyn Maxwell

Evelyn G. Maxwell, 92, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Thursday, March 11, 2010 at her home. Born August 29, 1917 in Mansfield, she was the daughter of John and Caroline Hess Gross. Evelyn graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1935. In January 1938, she married George E. Maxwell and they just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. She retired from Mansfield General Hospital in 1979 as an administrative secretary. Prior to her retirement, she worked as an assistant manager of Mansfield Area Chamber of Commerce, manager of Richland County Tourist and Convention Bureau, and secretary to the Administrator at Mansfield Public Schools. Evelyn was a member of First Congregational Church. Caring and always smiling, Evelyn was a wonderful wife and mother who was always there for others. A snow bird, she spent part of her time in Mesa, Arizona. She enjoyed playing the organ, knitting, crocheting, and sewing.

She is survived by her husband, George E. Maxwell; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Liz Maxwell of Grove City; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Maxwell and Larry Marsh of Mansfield; three grandchildren, Kari Dwayne Hawk, Megan and Andrew Maxwell; two step grandchildren, John Marsh, and Jeff Sally Marsh; three great-grandchildren, Jacob Marsh, Kelsey and Mackenzie Hawk; and brother and sister-in-law, John and Miriam Gross. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Gross Kochheiser.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd., Mansfield conducted by Rev. David Hartzfeld. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to MedCentral Hospice. The family would like to make a special thank you to MedCentral Hospice, the nurses on the fourth floor of MedCentral Hospital, and the Wedgewood Estates Staff for all their care.
