James Vaughn Carroll, 91, of Mansfield, passed away early Thursday morning, July 21, 2016, at Arbors of Mifflin. He was born August 28, 1924, in the small town of Fultz, Kentucky, one of ten children of the late Frank and Inez (Littleton) Carroll.
Vaughn was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1944, he met the love of his life, Betty Rogers, and they married in 1948 following his discharge from active duty. A hard working man, Vaughn never was one to procrastinate. If there was a task to be finished, he was working to get it completed. He retired from Bellwood Nursery in 1990 after 30 years of service. Prior to that, he had been employed at clay mines and with the railroad in Kentucky.
In 1981, at Community Bible Church he began his deep and lasting relationship with his Lord, Jesus. He was very involved in many church ministries, and especially enjoyed driving the bus on Sunday mornings. He enjoyed listening to country music in his free time.
Vaughn was a determined man with a bit of a stubborn streak and very sharp mind. His family was most important to him and his quiet, dedicated and loving way of being with his family leaves a legacy to be treasured.
Vaughn is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty Carroll; treasured children, Larry (Direnda) Carroll, Kenny (Kathy) Carroll, Krista Schnuerer and Jeffrey Brent Carroll (Deb Reynolds); nine adorable grandchildren, Jill, Christen, Kenny, Kimberlee, Jeremy, Matthew, Tara, Brandon, and Karlie; twelve darling great-grandchildren; and two precious great-great grandchildren. A special thanks to these nephews, Philip (Joan) Carroll, Nick (Cheryl) Carroll, Randy (Pauline) Carroll and Kevin Carroll, for their care and compassion given to the entire family throughout the years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. Burial will proceed to Mansfield Memorial Park.
