
James Irving Garberich, age 82, of Old Stone Ct., Mansfield, died Friday, July 2, 2011 at MedCentral Hospital of a sudden heart attack. He was born December 13, 1928 in Crestline the son of Irving K. and Esther P. Sherer Garberich. A 1946 graduate of Crestline High School, Jim was drafted into the Army in 1950, serving in the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he attended Wittenberg University, graduating with a BS in Music Education. He received a Masters degree in guidance. He taught vocal and instrumental music in the Ontario Schools for 30 years, retiring in 1983. He was a life member of the American Legion, Post 0488 Crestline, AMVETS, and AARP. He was a director of Master Singers Male Chorus and directed the orchestra for three musicals staged by St. Peters Summer Theater. His most recent position was that of choirmaster and substitute organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crestline. Jim enjoyed attending athletic events and musical programs of his children and grandchildren, bowling, and attending races at Mid-Ohio.
On August 25, 1956 he married Norma Mack and they would have celebrated their 55th anniversary this August. She survives along with two sons and a daughter, Michael Joetta Garberich of Springfield, Steve Lana Garberich of Crestline, and Kathleen Dudley Thomas of Howard; 12 grandchildren, Lauryn, Mikayla, Alyssa, and Mikynna Garberich, Jennifer Mark, Julie, Randy Christi, Joshua, Christopher, Zach, and Ashley Thomas, Blake Brandi, Chad and Molly Garberich; three great grandchildren, Bradyn Clevenger and Katlynn and Adalyn Garberich; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crestline with Pastor Diana Seaman officiating. Calling will be an hour before the service in the church lounge. Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family of James Garberich.
