Jim was a telephone technician, retiring from United Telephone. He enjoyed going to swap meets, garage sales, raising livestock and playing golf. His most favorite activity was spending time with his family and friends.
A loving father and grandfather, Jim was a happy guy who had an ornery streak. He will be remembered for his love of singing classical music, having all of his grandchildren stay with him during their summer vacation on his farm in Virginia, and his love of searching for special items for his family and friends. Most of all, Jim will be remembered for the love he joyfully shared with his family and friends!
He is survived by eight children, James (Roberta) Layland, Ron (Anita) Weiss, Tim (Sharron) Layland, Jamie (Bill) Finley, Carla (Jerry) Totman, Kandi (Myron) Foncannon, Dottie (Mike) Young, and Carol Sanchez; twenty grandchildren; and forty-three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Ron Layland; sister, Mary Mills; and special friends, Sherry and Sally. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Weiss and Ruth Sauder Weiss; beloved wife of 25 years, Arlene Cairns Weiss; and three grandchildren, James Layland III, Carl Layland and Dillion Foncannon.
A gathering of Jim's family and friends will be held Thursday, December 8, 2016, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. in the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield. Private burial will be held in Lantz Cemetery.
