Mrs. Clayton was a lady of class and elegance from the first day I met her - as a young freshman in the fall of 1975. There I was, fulfilling an assignment in the AC Band scavenger hunt, ringing the doorbell of the President's home, to ask for a roll of their toilet paper signed by Dr. Clayton. With grace she answered the door and with equal grace and care, accepted the request with a simple, "Glenn, the band freshmen are here with a request for you to fulfill." She was such a help then and lived that graceful way every time I encountered her in all the years that followed. Thank you for giving to the students in such a loving way. - Tom Schiefer '79

What a wonderful lady and friend we all had in Janet Clayton! She and Dr. Clayton "were" Ashland College / University!  To we AC / AU students, the Clayton's were our "parents away from home!"  Alice and I have fond memories of Glenn and Janet and they will forever be a part of our lives.  I can still remember the night I had to go to the President's residence to share the news we would probably have to cancel the May, 1970 performance of Bob Hope because of the issues happening at Kent State.  I never saw Dr. Clayton so nervous as he prepared to personally call Bob Hope.  The calm hand of Janet was placed on his shoulder and she simply said, "He will understand that the safety of our students is our first priority."  They were a wonderful team together and now they are together again.

Dear Clayton Family,
I couldn't be there to offer my condolence for Janet's passing.  I knew her when I worked with other residents at Belmont Tower as an employee with Ashland Home Care.  She was a very sweet lady and I saw her often there.  My working schedule prevented me from attending her services.  Take heart.  Time will soften the edges and ease your burden.  God bless your family.

Dear Lenny and Family,

My earliest memories of your mother are from our days at summer Bible School at Park Street Brethren Church.  Later, it was in your homes on Center Street and our years in high school.  I remember that your mother always expressed interest in our activities. Later still, I think of both your mother and father at then Ashland College and the many activities they attended.  Always the lady and gentleman, they set an example for all who knew them.  You are in many thoughts and prayers in the days to come.

Don and I are so sorry that we will not be there to celebrate Aunt Janet's life.  We have wonderful memories of our times spent with her and Uncle Glenn.  As a college student in her home she was very kind to me.  Over the years she was very supportive in our good and bad times.  We will miss her letters and her smiles. I met Janet and Glenn in 1968 as a new student at Ashland College. The Claytons shopped for their clothes in Wooster.When I began working in our family business, Freedlander's, they often stopped in to visit me in my department. As the years passed, we developed a strong friendship.My husband and I spent many wonderful evenings with the Claytons. They had many close friends and we were honored to be among them.  We cherish these many memories. One of Glenn's favorite chairs resides in our den. Janet shared several recipes with me that are really yummy.
