
L.A. Newport, Sr., 81, of 4138 Snodgrass Road died Friday morning, December 14, 2001 at MedCentral Mansfield after an extended illness. Mr. Newport was born May 10, 1920 in Sunbright, Tennessee living in the Mansfield area since 1957. He retired from General Motors after 31 years. He was a member of U.A.W. #549 and the Civilian Conservation Corps. He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. He loved his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, L.A., Jr. & Debbie Newport of Crestline, Senior & Della Newport, Fred & Marilyn Newport, Al & Sheila Newport and Roger & Amy Newport, all of Mansfield; four daughters and sons-in-law, Genny Snyder and friend Chuck of East Tawas, Michigan, Mary & Reed Lawhun of Mansfield, Marsha & Tony Rettig and Patsy & Fred Wiseman, all of Findlay, Ohio; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Cherri & Leon Barnett; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Bob & Genevieve Williams, all of Deer Lodge, Tennessee; 26 grandchildren; two step granddaughters; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wendell Lee & Marilyn Newport and Lemuel & June Newport, all of Sunbright, Tennessee; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Lizzie & Homer Bailey of Kingston, Tennessee, Irene Calavan of Dayton, Ohio and Geraldine Armes of Wartburg, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinley & Melinda Stringfield Newport; his wife, Ruth Clinton Williams Newport; two sisters, Lorene Smith and Marine Phelps; a brother, Nathaniel Newport; and a step grandson, Archie Barnett, Jr.
Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home conducted by Rev. Monty Perry and Brother Darrel Harless. Burial will be in Crawford County Memory Gardens.
