
Max E. Scott, 92, of Mansfield, died Sunday, July 29, 2007 at his daughter's home after a long illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born July 15, 1915 in Mansfield, he was the son of Harry and Nellie Gilkison Scott. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High in 1933. Mr. Scott retired from Westinghouse after 35 years of service. In addition to regular full time jobs, he was a farmer most of his adult life. He also worked as an Ontario local school bus driver for 11 years and was a volunteer fireman in Springfield Township for more than 30 years, including acting as interim fire chief for a period of time. Mr. Scott loved to play baseball and was an outstanding catcher for many years. He turned down an opportunity to play in the minors due to responsibilities at home. He enjoyed his family, helping others, motorcycles, Silver King tractors, and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in many athletic events. Mr. Scott served in the European theater during WWII as a construction equipment mechanic attaining the rank of staff sergeant in the 969th Engineer Maintenance Depot of the United States Army. He was a member of St. John's united Church of Christ, where he served on the Board of Trustees spending countless hours volunteering with maintenance and repairs. He recently attended the First Church of God on Park Ave. West.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Selena and Dallas Strickler, and Carol and Melvin Smith, all of Ontario; six grandchildren, Jeff Karen Strickler, Donnie Randy Perry, Kimberly Donald Whitcomb, Kurt Stacey Strickler, Troy Smith, and Tracy Michael Jewell; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Helen Zimmerman, and Stella Litzler, both of Mansfield, and Rosie Palasky of Lexington; numerous nieces and nephews; and army buddy, Mike Panyik. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary in 2005; one sister, Mary Gross of California; four brothers, Jim, Paul, Harry, and Don Scott; and special friend, Roy 'Petey' Beer.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, August 2, 2007 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home conducted by Rev. Marcus Buehrer and Rev. Jeff Gray. Military graveside services conducted by the Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Springfield Township Fire Department or MedCentral Hospice.
