I worked with Derick.. he was a very fun loving kid. so sad to hear of such a sweet young person leaving us.. but he is in the arms of Jesus now! God Bless ALL of his loved ones!

Dear Family,
I was a friend of Derick's. I am sad to hear about Derick. I had talked to him the day before he passed away. He seemed like everything was prefectly fine like he always did when he would talk to me. I spent time with Derick while he was home the last time. I met his Dad and Step mom. You guys made me feel very comfortable. I remember you guys taking pics while I was there of Derick and I. I would like to get a copy of those if possible. Derick was a great friend. Whenever I needed someone to talk to he was always there. We would talk about anything. He would always brag about his beautiful daughter. I was planning on going out to visit him this spring. I am sorry that I was not there to support you all. I just found out about it today. I kept wondering why he was not returning my calls or texts. I just figured he was in the field for a while so I was waiting on him to message me back. I will miss Derick Duane Alot. I love him alot. He will always be in my heart. You all will be in my prayers.

We are having a difficult time coming to grips with this, we can't imagine what you must be going through.  We're so glad that Derick chose to keep in touch with us.  We will all have to just remember Derick's "free spirit", his goofiness, his laugh, his kindness and the fun he had with life.  We will miss him more than words can say.  Our ongoing family is not the norm for most but he was a special part of it.  Crystal, we know Derick loved you and Kev, and he was so excited about his niece.  Derick knew you were always there for him and we thank you for that.

To my family& Derick,
 The tragedy that has hit our family is unbelievable. First Derick's mother my sister dies, hit by a car at the age of 35, then his 19 year old brother James hit by a drunk driver and killed, now my dear nephew Derick at the age of 21. How very sad for our whole family. Our Marine- Our Hero. You survived Afghanistan. Came home to us safe and then to die in such a tragic way. The real nightmare is the way your so called wife Jessica Gladden laid you to rest. Not with your brother nor your mother, not even in the Veterans Cemetery. No Military funeral that you deserved. No funeral at all, just treated like a piece of trash. She showed us what she thought of you. How could your so called wife treat you with such disrespect You fought for our country. You were a hero to so many. A brother, a son, a uncle, a nephew, but most important A UNITED STATES MARINE. Jessica Gladden, I have one question for you, how can you lay your head down at night One day you will have to answer to a higher power. Derick, my dear nephew, may you rest in peace with your mother and brother. Thank you for serving our country and making our family proud. I will love and miss you for ever.
