
Shirley J. Barton, 69, of Mansfield, died early Thursday morning, December 10, 2009, after a courageous three year battle with ALS-Lou Gehrig's Disease in Winchester Terrace Nursing Home. Born June 1, 1940, in Clinchco, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Grady Dutton and Florence Turner Martin. She retired from Madison Schools where she was a cook. Shirley enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and cooking. Her greatest joy was in spending time with her family.
She is survived by a son, Ronald Marilyn Barton of Eustis, FL; four daughters, Rita Gary Scott of Sevierville, TN, Nancy Sigafoos of Sevierville, TN, Carolyn Tom Butler of Mt. Gilead and Sarah David Johnson of Mansfield; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Martin of Smithville, TN, Gene Dutton of Mountain Grove, MO and Larry Martin; five sisters, Rita Colley of Clintwood, VA, Joyce Mabe of Suffolk, VA, Judy Stewart of Heathville, VA, Jan Vaughan of Suffolk, VA, and Carroll Thorne of Waldorf, MD; stepmother, Ruby Dutton of Suffolk, VA; two brothers-in-law, Paul Barton of Winston-Salem, NC and Joe Barton of Lexington, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Her husband of 54 years, Clyde, preceded her in death on August 31, 2009.
Friends may visit from 11:45-12:45 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road, Mansfield. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. at Mansfield Memorial Park.
