

Shirley Ann Yoakam Schluter, 65, of Mansfield died October 14, 1999 at her home, following a brief illness. Shirley was born to Duke Yoakam & Ann 'Nan' Freiheit Yoakam Boreman March 11, 1934 in Mansfield, residing in the area all her life. She graduated in 1952 from Mansfield Senior High School, where she was Homecoming Queen. Shirley was a volunteer for numerous community events, Discovery School activities and additional charities. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Westbrook Country Club, Catawba Island Country Club, Steel Magnolias Elite Eight, her favorite bridge club and served as chairperson of the decorating committee for the Mansfield Art Center Christmas Ball. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, and a fairy-tale grandmother. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and we will be continually embraced by her love.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Theodore 'Ted' F. Schluter of Mansfield; a daughter & son-in-law, Kim and Tom Hickox and children, Hobie & Allison Hickox; a son & daughter-in-law, Dirk & Tammi Schluter and children, Kyle, Christina, and A.J.; a son & daughter-in-law, Brett & Darlene Schluter and children, John & Jena Schluter; her mother and father Ann and Jim Boreman; her mother-in-law Goldie Schluter; a brother & sister-in-law, George & Darlene Yoakam and children Misty, Kerri; Darcy and Leslie a, sister-in-law, Jeanie Schluter Crouse and children Terry, Tracy and Chuck Jr.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Bill Cunningham and children Bill Jr. and Kelly; a beloved aunt, Bessie Yoakam Wagner of Mansfield; Lori Brumfield-Brubach to whom she was a second mom; and many great aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Duke Yoakam, her father-in-law Whitey Schluter; a brother-in-law Chuck Schluter; a special aunt, Katie Brumfield; and grandpa and grandma, George & Bessie Yoakam.
We will welcome family and friends at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors Saturday, October 16, 1999 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A service to celebrate her life will be held Sunday, October 17, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church, 41 Bowman St., where she and Ted were united in marriage. The services celebrating her life will be conducted by Rev. John Jorden and joined by Rev. David S. Sipes, a good friend. In Shirley's honor, a procession will follow to Mansfield Memorial Park for final resting.
