

Victor Samuel Day, 86, formerly of Mansfield, died Wednesday, December 4, 2002 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was born in England in 1916 to Laban and Mary Ann Polly Day, who preceded him in death. He immigrated to Savannah, Ohio eventually settling in Mansfield where he spent most of his adult life. In 1937, he married Christine Chris Ruhl, who survives him. Vic was known for his music, photography, woodworking and watercolor art, in which he earned many accolades and awards. He taught music at Ashland University, Wooster College and also privately. Because of his diverse interest in music, Vic was a member in the first Mansfield Symphony, the Akron Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Lakeside Symphony, and the Cleveland Symphony as well as many big bands and jazz groups locally and throughout the state. Vic was a Gold Card member of the Musician's Union in Mansfield and the union in St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Florida. He belonged to the Masons, Al Koran Shrine, Moose, Elks, Sons of Herman, Sons of Italy, Owls, Eagles and Liederkranz. Vic was a founding member of the Mohican Sailing Club, the Mohican Bow Hunters and the Mansfield Art Center. Music, books, gardening and long walks occupied much of Vic's life.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne Sabri-Plodzien and Rich Plodzien and Vicki and Ted Furuki; a sister, Bea Kilgore of Lucas and her children and grandchildren; five cousins, their children and grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his 99 year-old aunt. His five grandchildren and three great-granddaughters will miss their grandpa.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors one hour prior to a memorial service to be held Thursday, December 26, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vic Day Scholarship Fund at Local 159 Musician's Union.
