Roger was born in Sturgis, Kentucky on March 20, 1941 to Pleasant Newcom and Juanita Hess. He graduated from Sturgis High School in 1959 and joined the Army shortly after. He was stationed at Fort Devens in Massachusetts. After serving his country, Roger moved to Odessa, Texas where he began his career at Rexall. Soon after, he moved to Alvin, Texas, where he resided for many years, and began working for Amoco Chemical Company at Chocolate Bayou.
After many years working for the company, Roger retired in 1999 at an early age. He and Marilyn moved to Horseshoe Bay in 2019 to finish out retirement and live closer to Marilyn’s daughter and husband, Nikki and Pete.
Throughout his retirement, Roger was able to spend more time doing the activities he had come to enjoy in his life – traveling, running, and being with his family. Over the years, Roger and his wife, Marilyn, visited all 50 states and 30 countries. A dedicated runner, Roger competed in three marathons and participated in many races while traveling around the country.
Roger found great joy in spending time with his family and was always proud of the many accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; two daughters, Kacey (Joe Jr.) Saladino of Alvin and Angie (Philip) Ellis of Dripping Springs; six grandchildren, Jordan (Nicholas) Wat, Nicholas Taylor, Kailey Ellis, Kaden Ellis, Kassandra Ellis, and Kate Saladino; two great-grandchildren, Henry and Hudson Wat; his siblings, Randy (Rose) Hess and Susie Parker; and numerous nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to thank the staff at Celeste Care for their care and support in Roger’s final days.
A family memorial will be held at a later date in Caseyville, Kentucky. In memory of Roger, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
