Romonna Jane Martinka Hartman entered this world on October 11, 1936 in Granger, Texas as the beloved youngest child of Vergie Bernell Page and John Desiderus Martinka. She joined her three older sisters in making the family complete.
In June of 1956, she met a young man, Al Hartman. Al told the story of seeing this pretty and composed young woman walking down the street; he asked his friend who she was and was told, “She’s one of the Martinka girls.” Al made it a point to get her number and called her right up. They married in August of 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylor, TX and they were together from that moment on until Al’s passing in 1995. They made their home in Marble Falls for the past 60 years where they raised three terrific children. They shared a passion for their home, their children, and bowling! Romonna belonged to many bowling leagues over the years both with her friends as well as with Al and her youngest son, Jeff. She truly enjoyed the game and the camaraderie.
Romonna was preceded in death by her parents and her husband as well as her three sisters; Pauline Beard, Mary Ann Hanacik, and Lillian Martinka.
She is survived by her children Cathy Hartman of Austin, David Hartman and wife, Angela, of Hutto, and Jeff Hartman and wife, Hatti, of Marble Falls. Romonna also leaves as blessings her much loved grandchildren; Courtney Foley, Kylie & Justin Ledbetter, Holli Hartman, Alison & Luke Kobilan, and Adam Hartman. She is also survived by the source of her biggest smiles recently, her great-granddaughter, Ellie Kobilan.
Meme, as Romonna was known to all her grandchildren, was a treasure in this world that needs more good, kind, and caring individuals. As her long-time neighbor and friend, Edwin McLean, always said, “Romonna is the true epitome of a lady.” And she certainly is…..
With Romonna’s passing, we have lost the last of her generation in her family. We are all better for having known, loved, and been loved by Romonna. She showed us by her enduring love, her gentle strength, her perseverance through the hard times, and her strong and abiding relationship with God that we can all be better people simply through the act of giving and receiving kindness and love. Though we still don’t have the full true “Meme” recipe for her chocolate chip cookies….. she held that close to the vest to the end.
“I expect to pass through this world but once, any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” -Stephen Grellet (1773-1855)
