

Emil O. Sommer Jr. of Shell Point Village in Fort Myers, Florida, died on August 23, 2011. He was born on December 19, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York of Emil O. Sommer and Marie A. Sommer. Emil grew up in Westchester County, New York, graduating from White Plains High School., from Lawrenceville School in New Jersey and from Lafayette College in Easton, PA. With a degree in Economics he attended the New York City graduate school of Business Administration.
Emil is survived by his wife, Betty, their three children, Marie E. Kay of Sarasota, Fl. Emil O. Sommer III of Kauai, Hawaii, and Peter D. Sommer of Houston, Tx. There are nine grandchildren.
As a young man in White Plains, New York Emil became an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scout master. While residing in Armonk, N.Y. he was involved in many community organizations and served as united Fund Chairman. He was a member of the Presbyterian churches of both Scarsdale and Bedford.
Following completion of his military service in World War II as a skipper of a Motor Torpedo Boat operating in the South Pacific he joined the firm of Price Waterhouse and Co. as a staff auditor. This was followed by 26years of identification with the U.S. Steel Industry retiring as Senior Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer of the American Iron and Steel Institute, one of the largest business associations in the country at that time. Emil was a member of the Duquesne Club of Pittsburg, the Murray Hill and Pinnacle Clubs in New York City the University Club in Washington, D.C. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Murray Hill Club and of the Saugus Iron Works in Saugus, Mass. He was a member of the 100 Club of Naples and Fort Myers.
An enthusiastic golfer, Emil was a member of several golf clubs on Westchester County, N.Y. the congressional C.C. in Potomac, MD., and was one of the three founders of the Island Country Club on Marco Island where he was a member of the original Board of Directors as Vice-President and Chairman of the Finance Committee.
He moved to Shell Point Retirement Village in Fort Myers in November, 2001.
