Greg was born on September 7, 1952, and was the adopted son of Arleigh and Betty Lou Kraupa of New Richland, MN. In his high school years, he was an Eagle Scout and an outstanding musician and competitive wrestler. He continued his education for two years at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD where he established many life-long friendships. Greg then obtained his Doctorate in Optometry from Pacific University.
In 1977 Dr. Kraupa opened the Eye Care Center in North St. Paul, which he and his partners eventually developed into a highly successful and respected practice with clinics in three locations. This practice was honored by the Twin City Chamber of Commerce as Business of the year, while Dr. Kraupa, himself, earned numerous awards and held many leadership positions including Minnesota Optometrist of the Year, twice, President of the Minnesota Optometric Association, Distinguished Award in Optometry of Minnesota and National Chair for the American Optometric Association. Dr. Kraupa was considered by his peers, patients, and employees to be an exceptionally intelligent, thoughtful, and compassionate leader. Greg was also a devoted member of the Rotary Club of White Bear, Maplewood, and Oakdale.
After decades of dedicated service, Greg officially retired to spend more time on the water, playing golf, and enjoying life with his loved ones. Greg loved to sail and after earning his bare-boat captain’s license took many fortunate family members and friends on magical sailing adventures in the British Virgin Islands and the Grenadines. Whether navigating the narrow channel into Soper’s Hole, sharing a Painkiller at Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke, or simply surviving a late-night ride with his pontoon buddies on Snail Lake, the jovial “Captain Bear” was always in command with a wide grin on his face and a story to tell!
Greg’s greatest joy was his family and his beloved partner of almost 20 years, Annette (Annie) Potter, who shared in his life, laughter, and travels. He leaves behind his two daughters: Lindsay Guerrero, (husband Raul) and Ashley Pelton (husband Jason). His beloved grandchildren, Gabby, Greyson, and Ryzen will grow up hearing many exciting tales about their “Grandpa Bear”. His sister, Anntouza Sedjo and her husband Jim of Seattle, WA, also survive him.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his former wife, Barbara (Hiniker).
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 4, 2026, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Snail Lake Regional Park Pavillion, 4191 Snail Lake Blvd, Shoreview, MN 55126. True to Greg’s style, there will be pirate stories, island attire, and a final toast to a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to the Champagne Center for Brain Health or Avow Hospice Services.
