James R. "Jim" Koller, a distinguished figure in the world of horsemanship and a proud resident of Marco Island, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2023. He was 80 years old and was surrounded by his loving family in his final moments.
Jim was born on March 25, 1943, in Northfield, Illinois, where he discovered an enduring passion and a remarkable talent for working with horses. As a young teenager, his horsemanship journey began in the humble surrounds of a local stable, mucking out stalls for the chance to ride freely.
At the age of 16, Jim left home for the rugged terrains of Colorado, where he honed his skills by taming wild mustangs. This early experience forged a deep and unwavering respect for these majestic and powerful creatures.
Upon completing his service in the U.S. Navy, Jim was privileged to apprentice under the tutelage of the legendary Garland Bradshaw, which further shaped and developed his abilities in horsemanship. His working journey also led him to work alongside George Gwinn, whom Jim often acknowledged for teaching him the business acumen necessary to thrive in the industry. Throughout his illustrious career, Jim held positions with esteemed establishments such as Ben Segalla of Illinois, Mrs. Roth’s Why Worry Farm of California, Blue and White Stables of Indiana and Florida, and Jim Brae of Texas.
Jim eventually realized his dream of owning his own equestrian establishment, Koller Farms, first in Barrington, Illinois, and later in Simpsonville, Kentucky. Over nearly half a century in the industry, he successfully trained, showed, and sold countless world champions.
In 2006, in recognition of his significant contributions to the Saddlebred industry and his dedicated efforts to improve the sport, Jim was rightfully inducted into the Kentucky State Fair World Championship Horse Show Hall of Fame. Many peers and fans regard Jim as a legendary figure, gifted with talent, patience, a flair for showmanship, and a temperament ideally suited for nurturing young horses' potential.
Also in 2006, Jim embarked on a new journey as he wed his beloved wife, Beth. The couple moved to Marco Island, Florida, where Jim embraced a rewarding retirement. During these years, he worked as an investment analyst, enjoyed boating, traveling, and cherished his life in the beautiful enclave. He was an active member of Marco Presbyterian Church and found great spiritual comfort in the sermons of Alistair Begg.
Jim is survived by his wife, Beth, his sons Ken and Stephen Koller of Louisville, KY, his nephew John Koller of Milwaukee, WI, and his stepchildren Glenn T. Werry (Mackenzie), of Versailles, KY, and Sarah Presley (David), of Chagrin Falls, OH.
His spirit, wisdom, and the indelible mark he left on the world of horsemanship will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
