Born on December 24, 1941, in the small town of Rosmuc, Ireland, John carried his Irish heritage with him throughout his life. As a teenager, he moved to England, and a year later emigrated to the United States. He was incredibly proud of becoming a U.S. citizen—one of the defining moments of his life—while always remaining deeply connected to his Irish roots.
John lived in many places over the years, including the Bronx, New York; Fishkill, New York; Long Beach Island, New Jersey; and finally, Marco Island, Florida. Wherever he went, he built lasting relationships and remained closely connected with family and friends around the world.
A proud veteran, John served in the United States Army and carried that sense of duty and pride throughout his life. By trade, he was a highly skilled carpenter who owned and operated construction companies in New York, earning a reputation for his craftsmanship and strong work ethic.
John was the kind of man who would do anything for you if you asked—and often even if you didn’t. He had a natural instinct to step in and help wherever he saw a need, making him a pillar of every community he was part of. Even in retirement, he remained active. After moving to Marco Island, he took a position at the Marco Island YMCA, continuing his lifelong commitment to service.
His strong Catholic faith was central to who he was. In every place he lived, John generously volunteered his time at church functions, always giving back with humility and devotion.
He was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Ann; his brother Patrick and sister-in-law Nora; his sister Bridie and brother-in-law Patsy; his sister Mary; and his brother Peter.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Isabel; his children: Shawn (Kate), Brian (Lisa), Michael, Siobhan (Jeff), and Annie (Greg); and his cherished grandchildren: Christina (Ryan, children John and Braeden), Danielle (Kevin), Stephanie (Brandon, child Callan), Zoe, Jake, James, Danny, Madison, and Ally. He is also survived by his sisters Eileen, Julia, and Maggie, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
John has been cremated and will be laid to rest at San Marco Catholic Church, 851 San Marco Rd, Marco Island, FL 34145, where he was a devoted parishioner during his time on Marco Island. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 29, 2026. Following the mass, a celebration of John’s life will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Paddy Murphy’s Irish Pub, 1089 N Collier Blvd Unit 440, Marco Island, Florida. All who wish to honor and celebrate John’s life are warmly invited to attend.
