Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Brown, age 81, of Morganton, Georgia, previously of Smyrna, passed away on January 27, 2025, finally at peace after a long battle with Dementia. She was born in Florida to the late Lila Mae Killingsworth.
Betty was a supportive and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and aunt. She worked as an accountant for the state of Georgia for 34 years and was excited to retire just before the Olympics came to Atlanta in 1996. While working at the Capitol, she occasionally shared a picnic table for lunch with future President Jimmy Carter. Betty was a graduate of Marietta High School and Marsh Business College, in Atlanta, where she excelled in typing, shorthand, and accounting.
She was a dedicated cheerleading coach and mom in Smyrna and sewed many cheerleading and twirling competition uniforms, as well as clothing for family and friends, and even a cousin’s wedding dress. She was always cheering and supporting her husband, daughter, and granddaughter at their softball games, and learning about ice hockey to cheer for her grandson. She cherished camping and spending time with her family. Betty was adventurous and willing to try anything—from roller coasters and water skiing to front flips down hills with her grandkids. She especially loved taking Harley rides with her son-in-law James and beloved husband, Carl, with whom she shared 62 wonderful years. She was a long time member of Wilson Memorial Baptist Church in Oakdale and most recently Hemptown Baptist Church in Morganton.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lila Mae Killingsworth; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Barbara Killingsworth; niece, Kimberly Waldrip; aunt, Annette Sellars; and cousin, Carolyn Carter.
She was survived by her adoring husband, Carl, who recently passed away on March 21st, 2025. Betty is also survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carla and James Millwood; her grandson, Clinton Millwood, and his wife, Annie; her granddaughter, Lenlie Millwood; close cousins, Peggy Henson, Marilyn Tupper, Linda Hulsey, Barbara and Donnie Daugherty, and many other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family will welcome visitors on Thursday, April 3, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Georgia Memorial Park/Winkenhofer Chapel in Marietta with Pastor Eric Davenport officiating.
