James Edward Scott, 84 years old, passed away on December 26, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and was passionate about his love for Jesus and the Bible.
Jim was born on December 6, 1931 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the first child of Emma Marie Klopfenstein and Frederick James Scott. His younger sister, Anne Marie Hynes, resides with her husband Robert Hynes in Northern Virginia. Jim grew up in Suffield, Connecticut and later Agawam, Massachusetts graduating from Agawam High School. Upon graduating, Jim’s adventurous spirit led him to attend college at University of Illinois on a music scholarship and then in ROTC at Ohio State University. With the US at war in Korea, Jim enlisted in the US Navy in 1951 and was stationed in the Mediterranean on the USS Coral Sea. Jim served until May 1955 and received the National Defense Service Medal and Navy Occupation Service Medal “E”. While home for leave on New Year’s Eve 1955, he and his best friend, Jim Hollister, went to a dance. A lovely lady caught his eye, and he asked her to dance. The rest is history. On September 3, 1955, he married Doreen Campbell, who had just arrived in the US from Belfast, Northern Ireland to live with her sister. They were married for 61 wonderful years!
While Doreen went to work at Spaulding’s Sporting Goods, Jim enrolled in the University of Massachusetts and earned his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration in May 1958, just one week after his first daughter Cheryl Lyn was born. He then enrolled in Western New England College earning his MBA. In 1960, his second daughter Kimberly was born.
Jim had a successful career in the grocery business, working in retail operations for Mott’s Supermarkets which ran a chain of stores called Shoprite in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Later, he was recruited to Charley Brothers, wholesale supplier to Shop ‘n Save in Western Pennsylvania, and the family moved to Greensburg. Jim was in charge of opening new stores and helping store owners increase profits through better store operations, merchandising and advertising. After retiring from the supermarket business, Jim started a new career with Doreen running discount book stores. They did this from Buffalo, New York where they enjoyed trips to Canada and frequent visits with Kim who was in Pittsburgh.
In 2001, Jim and Doreen moved to Sarasota, Florida where they enjoyed golf, the beach, bridge and visits with the kids and grandkids. Jim was very active in his church and enjoyed Bible studies, Sunday school classes and reading his Bible. He loved music and played the violin and trombone. He even became a life master in bridge. Jim was a joyful person who loved to tell stories. He wrote a book called ‘My Divine Appointments’ chronicling his life stories and his seven major blessings – Doreen, Cheryl, Kim and his four grandsons.
