

Matthew Thomas Hinz, age 40, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away on September 28, 2025. Matt was born on June 6, 1985, in Bethesda, Maryland. Raised in Marietta, he took full advantage of what life had to offer. He participated in soccer, baseball, basketball, track and field, handball, swimming, football, tennis, and even took a brief go at the French horn. He excelled in most and was a 1995 racewalking National Champion. Matt loved music, movies, cooking, and traveling, especially to Grayton Beach, Florida. He enjoyed watching football and was a devoted Georgia Dawgs fan.
Matt graduated from The Westminster Schools in 2003, where he was a member of the varsity football and tennis teams, helping the Wildcats win four straight tennis state championships. Not afraid to stand out, he could be found wearing a bright Hawaiian shirt while driving his 1991 red Cadillac DeVille. Matt was a friend to all. He was outgoing, funny, sensitive, empathetic, and kind. Those who knew him described him as smart, loving, observant, authentic, and genuine.
Matt went on to attended Southern Methodist University, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing and a minor in Political Science. After college, he lived in Orlando, Florida and later Carbondale and Aspen, Colorado, before settling again in Marietta. Always learning and growing, Matt sought self-acceptance, -improvement, and -forgiveness, and strove to let go of resentment. He is a part of wonderful memories for so many, and he will be deeply missed.
Matt is preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Dorothy Hoag, and Walter and Willa ‘Kayo’ Hinz; aunt and uncle, John and Marilynn Ford; and uncle, Jim Wilson. He is survived by his parents, Martha Hinz and Tom Hinz; sister, Holly Kaufman (Brad); niece, Lucy; and aunt, Judy Wilson.
A Celebration of Life for Matt will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at HM Patterson Canton Hill, 1157 Old Canton Road, Marietta, Georgia 30068. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Addiction Alliance of Georgia.
