Your Dad was a special man who raised his children well.  You were blessed to be with him to the end of his earthly life.  We were pleased to have met him a few times.  May he rest in God’s light and peace.

We have been thinking of you & your family and we pray for your solace and guidance during these difficult days.  We wish you the happiest of memories of your father as time works to ease the pain.

Charles Johnson was such a GOOD man who loved each of his family members deeply & knew he was loved as much in return.  You all filled his heart with joy each time you were together.  Your concern for his well-being touched his heart.  May peace be yours.

So very sad to hear of Odie’s passing.  I know he had a rough time of it in the last few years but also know that he was well taken care of by his family.
Lots of wonderful memories of long talks about anything and everything that would go on for hours. He was very kind to me and showed me that his heart was always giving. I know that he will be missed.

Part 1 of 2: 
Dad was gregarious, always eager and willing to strike a conversation with friends, family, and strangers. He loved to meet people and he loved to talk. And he inherited what we refer to as the “Johnson long goodbye” which would have him following you out to your car continuing the conversation. If you weren’t careful he’d walk along beside you as you backed out of the driveway, trying to prolong the engagement with whomever he was speaking.
   But, at the same time, dad was humble and soft-spoken. He was never the center of attention and he liked it that way. He was on the sidelines where he could choose his time and place to begin a conversation with someone. He owned several businesses in his career and he embraced those responsibilities and carried them out with the same humility. He was slow, steady, and persistent but he always prevailed. Dad was stubbornly loyal to the people in his life and the causes he supported.
   Dad was a product of his humble background. He was born in a one-room shack in the middle of a field in rural central Georgia. This existence inspired him as a young boy to try to help the family improve their lot in life. He started his first “business” when he was about 8 or 9 years old. With the help of a hand-me-down bicycle he began selling ice to local families who had no ice and no refrigeration, providing a service to help them and to help his family with the income he earned. As dad told me, from this point on, he always had money in his pocket. It was his security and his safeguard and a way to move forward in life. 

Part 2 of 2:
Dad enjoyed traveling and often claimed to be a nomad. From International journeys to the mundane “windshield tours”, he loved to explore and to see new things. Just this year he had visited Anna Maria Island in Florida and he was on his way to Ohio the week of his death. He claimed to have never been lost, just “temporarily misplaced”. He excelled at drawing precise maps on scraps of paper or envelopes, for himself and others to use, only to leave out one critical piece of information. In this way he helped others discover their world by being “temporarily misplaced”.
   In the last few years dad would tell us “I’ve had a good life.”. We agreed and we would respond “We’ve all had a good life.” thanks to your loving care. We are all blessed to have had dad, Charles, O.C. in our lives and this is nothing more than another “Johnson long goodbye”.  We hope it lasts forever.


I was Charlie's caregiver for about 4 years, he will always continue to be in my heart not just as someone that I took care of but as my friend. The family took him from us, and I knew that I would never see him again. Sleep well my friend I will miss you.

Uncle Charles, you were truly one of a kind, with some many, many wonderful qualities. Thank you for the great vacation to Panama City Beach about ten years back, will always cherish that time.  Rest in Peace.                                                    Love, John and Jennifer

Charles had such a wonderful sense of humor and great taste in music. I loved sitting outside with him and watching the birds. I’ll always think about him when I see Nilla wafers and Honeycomb cereal. 

Sorry for your loss. I grew up with Richard, Linda and David during my High School years. Your dad was a class act.

Next door neighbor to Charles for many years. A Great American with True Grit.  We shared many memorable times with the Johnson family.
