

He was born July 2, 1941 in Rutherford County, NC to the late Broadus Hicks Hemphill and Nellie Early Hemphill. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother, Max Hemphill.
He was a former co-owner of Hemphill Tire Company and retired with 21 years of service as the McDowell County Emergency Services Director. At his retirement, he was awarded the prestigious honor of “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine” of North Carolina.
He was an active member of Glenwood Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon and on various committees including Chairman of the Building Fund for the new Glenwood Baptist Church, and was co-chair of the Jesus Video Project for McDowell County. He was a member of King’s Messenger Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the Glenwood School Advisory Committee and the Glenwood Youth Activities and has served as a Trustee for McDowell Technical Community College since 1983. He was a charter member and past president of the Glenwood Ruritan Club and charter member and past chief of the Glenwood Fire Department. He was instrumental in starting the first McDowell Fire and Rescue College and served on the State Fire and Rescue Pension Fund Board.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Jeanette Morgan Hemphill of the home; three children, Jan Hemphill Branton and husband, Randy, Fran Hemphill and wife, Jennifer and Van Hemphill all of Glenwood; five grandchildren, Julie and Jill Branton, Paige, Mackenzie and Morgan Hemphill; two sisters, Doris Woods and husband, Bill of Fletcher, NC and Margie Swann and husband, Gayden of Old Fort; three brothers, Walter Hemphill of Fletcher, NC, Dean Hemphill and wife, Bobbi of Acworth, GA and Ray Hemphill and wife, Penny of Glenwood.
Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Glenwood Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Brewer officiating. Burial will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will include: Ronnie, Johnny and Joey Hemphill, Craig, Ronald and Vincent Morgan and Tim Holland.
