
Sammy was born June 7, 1942 in Old Fort, the oldest of six children, to the late Warren Theodore Johnson and Mrytle Moore Johnson. He was a lifelong resident of McDowell County, where he worked at Baxter HealthCare, recently retiring after 23 years. He was married to the love of his life, JoAnne, on July 2, 1960. Together they raised five children and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2010. He was a caring and devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, valued friend and trusted brother.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his daughter; Peggy Lynn Johnson; and a brother-in-law; Tommy Allison.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnne Mills Johnson, his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, two sons; Sammy Darrell Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Meredith of Marion and Charles Eric Johnson, of Marion; two daughters, Donna Marie Johnson, of Atlanta, GA and Teresa Johnson of Marion, five grandchildren; Megan Tassin, Jeremiah Johnson, Kara Wheeler, Kasey Conley, and Raven Vasquez; one great-grandchild; Nashayla Ledford; two brothers; Tommy Johnson and his wife, Cindy of Old Fort and Ronnie Johnson and his wife, Millie of Nebo; three sisters, Linda Shehan of Old Fort, Martha Hazelwood and husband, Darrell of Old Fort and Kathy Allison of Marion; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2011 in the McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Ken Burleson officiating. Burial will follow at Living Waters Cemetery in Old Fort.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
