Carolyn Sue Gunn Miers, 93, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Brodie Ranch Nursing Facility in Austin, Texas, where she had been a resident since January, 2016. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10am on June 9, 2018 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Marlin, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, 129 Coleman, Marlin, Texas.
Sue Miers was born January 9, 1925 in Temple, Texas and lived with her family in Troy, Texas until she graduated from Troy High School. She attended college after high school, at her parents’ insistence, at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas and majored in music for one year. At the end of her freshman term, she decided to take the path she really loved, being a hairdresser, and moved back home. In order to put herself through cosmetology school, and by then WW2 had broken out, she worked painting ammunition boxes alongside other women helping to support the war and fund her plans to attend cosmetology school. When the war ended, she moved to Austin, Texas and enrolled in cosmetology school and earned her beauty license. Sue returned to Troy to live and work as a hairdresser in several salons, including the salon at the Veteran’s Hospital in Temple, where she built her reputation working with the wives of military officers.
In the early 1950’s, Sue lived in Temple and it was here that she met her future husband, L. E. (Eddie) Miers. Her father, Ollie C. Gunn, WW1 veteran was receiving treatment at the VA Hospital and was sharing a hospital room with Eddie who was recovering from physical complications received while serving in the South Pacific during WW II. Her father introduced them and they fell in love. Eddie loved the oil business and took a job working alongside his brother in North Dakota in 1951. He asked Sue to be his bride and she joined him there, where they were married on February 28, 1952 in Tioga, North Dakota. In 1954, they moved back to Temple, Texas because Sue was pregnant and having complications with her pregnancy due to diabetes and the extreme cold. In July, 1954, she gave birth to their only child, Helen Kay. Nine months later, they moved to Marlin, Texas when Eddie took the position of Canteen Officer at the Marlin VA Hospital. They lived in Marlin until 1999.
Sue was known well in Marlin for her Sue Miers Beauty Shop which she sustained for over 25 years before closing its doors and beginning work at the Falls Hotel beauty salon until her retirement. The relationships she built with clients were long-standing, many were life-long friends. There was something about doing person’s hair on a weekly basis, especially in those days that created a bond of trust and loyalty.
Sue was known for her wonderful, loving spirit, her laugh, her humor, her ability to keep up with fashion, her cooking and entertaining, masterful sewing and needlepoint, and her willingness to give to others in their time of need. Everyone knew Sue always had room at the table for drop-ins to have a delicious meal. It was known as the “Table of Plenty!” She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Marlin for over 46 years until moving to Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1999 and Austin, Texas in 2000.
Sue Miers is survived by her loving daughter, Helen Kay Miers and her partner, Cheryl Parrish, of Austin, Texas; sister-in-law Jewel Gunn of Seattle, Wash; cousin, Peggy Stanley of Scottsdale, Az; nieces Barbara Smotherman of Vashon Island, Wa; Brenda Rundel of Sugarland, Tx; Dr. Milinda Morris of Houston, Tx: Yvette Ellison of Dickens, Tx; Amanda McDowell of Farmersville, La. Nephews: Hap Weaver of Borne, Tx; John Weaver of Salado, Tx; Bill Webb of Flower Mound, Tx; and James Miers of Lincoln, Calf. and several great nieces and great nephews and many loving friends.
In lieu of flowers, her daughter requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church in Marlin in Sue’s memory.
