Mrs. Dolores Vegas Tully peacefully passed from this life on July 26th, several days short of completing her 93rd year. For 75 years, Dolores was the beloved wife and “Sunshine” of Aubrey W. Tully. She was a life long resident of the Westbank and became the permanent dance partner of Aubrey on her birthday, July 31, 1948. Dolores was the loving Mother of daughters Andrea Tully (Doug Marshall), Arleen Heiden (Brian) and son Aubrey John Tully. She was Grandmother (Maw Me) to John Wattigny, Robert Wattigny (Andrea) and Ethan Waters (Lara). She was also the Great Grandmother of Brycen, Colten and Jaxon Wattigny and Hayden Waters.
Dolores was a devoted housewife and mother. Once the children were grown, she continued her caring for 30 more years as a volunteer “pink lady” in the Gift Shop at West Jefferson Hospital. Everyone from the neighborhood was familiar with her beautiful welcoming face as she managed the precinct polling place for most elections for many, many years.
Dolores was the daughter of the late Clifton Vegas and Iva Roussell Vegas. She was sister to the late Joyce Vegas Leaber. Sister in Law to Theda Melerine (the late Landry), Betty Totora (Russell), the late Thomas Tully (Rose), Paul “Tucker” Tully (Barbara), Mercedes Tully Jordan (the late Henry), Marlene Tully Kelone, and Melroy Tully (Catherine). She also leaves behind numerous nieces & nephews. Dolores and Aubrey loved their many years together Cajun dancing along with their wonderful RV trips throughout the country. Ruidoso, New Mexico and all of their Texas buddies held the warmest spot in their hearts as they traveled there every summer. Dolores was the most stylish cowgirl there and was always recognized at home for her complete ensembles, dressed to the nines. She loved surrounding her home with beautiful bedding flowers and plants that she discovered during her travels. One of her greatest treasures was her beautiful Christmas Tree decorated with delicate crystal ornaments from her travels, that became a permanent fixture in her front room. Family and close friends also looked forward to her famous stuffed artichoke.
The Family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Tranquil Living II Assisted Care Facility. Their sincere care for their “singing buddy” during this last year was exceptional. Additional Thanks goes to Compassus Hospice Nurse Ms. Gail and her Aide, Angel. Their excellent care was a great comfort to the family and our mother.
Although conversations with Ms. Dolores were stolen from us during her final years due to the Alzheimer’s disease, family and friends will retain wonderful memories of this classy lady. And the song, “You are my Sunshine” will forever bring a smile and strike a beautiful memory of her singing voice.
Family and friends are invited to attend the memorial visitation on Saturday, August 5, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Westside/leitz-Eagan Funeral Home 5101 Westbank Expressway in Marrero. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 AM and interment will immediately follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Gretna.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer”s Association in Dolores Tully’s memory.
