

On Monday, November 30, 2020, sister Helen C. Johnson turned in her war clothes for a robe of peace. She fought the good fight, kept the faith and finished her course. Sister Johnson was born on February 13, 1934 in Franklinton, La to the late Charlie and Elma Conerly. She accepted the Lord at an early age at Bethel Church of Christ Holiness. Sister Johnson is a product of the Washington Parish School System. After graduating high school, she attended Grambling State University as an undergraduate. Sister Johnson was married to the late Rev. Irwin Johnson, Sr. From that union came two daughters and two sons. In the mid 50’s, Sister Johnson moved to New Orleans, La. She worked as a Dietician Specialist at Hotel Dieu Hospital, renamed University Hospital and later Tulane Medical Center. She also worked as a manager at Zip Top Restaurant and a caregiver at Redus Kiddie Kampus. Sister Johnson joined First Evangelist MBC under the leadership of the late Rev. J.L. Spears where she served as an usher. She continued serving under the late Rev. Johnny Blade, Rev.Henry Molden, the late Rev. Warren Taylor and the current pastor Rev. Reginald Landry. During a brief stay in Lafayette, La following hurricane Katrina, sister Johnson joined the Solid Rock MBC under the leadership of the late Rev. Robert H. Charles. She remained an honorary member there, as well as a member of Naomi Ruth under the leadership of the current pastor, Rev. Greg Randell. In 2016 sister Johnson moved her membership from First Evangelist to New Hope B.C. under the leadership of the current pastor, Rev. Warren E. Johnson. After serving 40 years as an usher she moved to the Deaconess board and served until her untimely death. Sis. Johnson is preceded in death by her three brothers (Willie, Shelby, and LeRoy), four sisters (Maureen, Charlene, Hilda and Mary) and a daughter (Lynette). She leaves to celebrate and carry on her memory, one daughter, Tanya J. Castille(Peter) of Rayne, LA, sons Rev. Irwin Johnson, Jr. (Trina) of New Orleans, LA, Rev. Warren E. Johnson of New Orleans, LA, Seven grandsons(Elliot, Erquawn, Queadreon, Aaron S., Emmanuel, Ricky and Erin); four granddaughters (LaKoshia, Leah, Helaina and Rakeisha; ten great-grandchildren; God-daughter Leticia Thigpin (Kelvin), God-son Clyde Spain, of New Orleans, LA; two sisters-in-law, Melvadean Conerly (Willie), Elaine Conerly (Shelby) and a host of nieces and nephews. Special recognition to two lifelong friends, Ethel Mae Davis of Marrero, LA and Mary Johnson of New Orleans, LA.
