Scott Bryan Adams passed away the week of January 23, 2021 at the age of 60. Although his life ended much too soon, he lived every day his way to the fullest. Scott had a larger than life persona with an infectious humor. He loved telling jokes and teasing those close to him. Scott could find the humor in almost any situation. Scott was fiercely loyal and caring to those closest to him. He will be dearly missed by family and friends, especially in his adopted city of New Orleans.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Scott attended The St. Mark’s School of Texas and then attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi fraternity. After working in the construction industry in Dallas in the late 1980s, Scott moved to New Orleans in 1993 to work as a commercial mortgage broker with Standard Mortgage. Six years later, Scott decided to return to the construction industry as a construction manager for the Jefferson Parish Public School System. He was one of the early responders to return to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in order to coordinate the reconstruction efforts for the School System. At the time of his death, Scott was in the process of retiring from the School System after over 20 years of service.
In 1996, Scott married Lisa Matthews, a family law attorney and native New Orleanian. Although they divorced later in life, Lisa and Scott remained close friends and continued to participate together in Krewe de Vieux.
Scott embraced the culture of New Orleans with a passion for Mardi Gras, JazzFest and darts. He was an active member of the Krewe de Vieux for 25 years and served as the Vice Captain of the Krewe de Vieux, Captain of the Krewe of Underwear, and later Float Captain for the Krewe of Underwear. Before the Underwear float was moved to the Den of Muses, Scott and his then wife Lisa Matthews stored the Underwear float at their house for many years, where they hosted many meetings and workdays preparing the float. Scott had also been a riding member of the Zulu and Bacchus Krewes.
Scott was a member of the Orleans Dart Club and played the for Homedale Hoes team and more recently, for Grits’ Aces team. Scott cherished the friends he made through darts, the camaraderie of his dart teams and winning local championships.
Scott was also an avid Texas Hold ‘Em Player. In May of 2004, Scott won a regional World Series of Poker tournament at Harrah’s in New Orleans, where he was awarded a Championship Ring. Scott enjoyed game theory and would spend hours studying various strategies. In June of 2004, Scott participated in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. He played alongside some of the legends of the game and placed 326 out of 2,568 entrants.
Scott loved people, making lasting connections on first meeting. One of his favorite pastimes was hanging out at a festival, parade or local bar just talking and meeting new people. Scott loved a good party. Scott had a quick wit and a sharp intelligence that could be hilarious, charming and at times, frustratingly correct.
One of his fellow Underwearians described Scott as “one of our most faithful and reliable members, always helping out with whatever needed attention, always quick with a laugh, always a contributor to our happy insanity. I have so many fond, glimpsing memories of him in the parade, a big happy bear handing out his glass beads, that big goofy grin plastered on his face, totally in the moment and in the mood. No one loved Krewe of Underwear more than Scott Adams, and few gave more to our merry band of creative misfits.”
Scott is survived by his sister Laurie A. Carroll of Dallas, Texas, his brother Daniel C, Adams of Los Angeles, California, his nephew Jackson A. Carroll, his niece Belisent Adams and his many friends in his adopted city of New Orleans.
