Born in Augusta, he was a graduate of Richmond Academy and the University of Georgia, and veteran of the US Army. With his wife, he started Bell Fatigue Company and built it into one of the oldest outdoor clothing manufacturers in the U.S. He was a lifelong member of Adas Yeshurun Synagogue where he relished being part of daily and weekly services, leading with spirit and grace. He was also a member of the Augusta West Rotary and served on the Board of University Hospital (now Piedmont Hospital).
Over his 97 years, he embodied the true spirit of life. Above all else he valued his time with family and friends, engaging in weekly social outings whether it was "lunch with the boys" or "dinner with the gang". He often could be found with his iPad in his hand, following his favorite baseball team the Braves, or working out with his personal trainer. His spiritual commitment to his community and love of his family were the cornerstones of his existence. His independent spirit and zest for life were an inspiration to all.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Steve Winter; sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Marisa Levy, Stephen and Jodi Levy; sister, Harriett Jacobs; granddaughter Rebecca Ackerman (Eddie); grandsons Eric Levy (Laura), Sean Levy (Sophie), Alex Levy (Avery) and Jason Winter (Alyssa), and great grandchildren Asher, Eloise, and Skyler.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Magnolia Cemetery with Rabbi David Sirull presiding. Pallbearers will be Steve Winter, Eric Levy, Sean Levy, Alex Levy, Jason Winter, Eddie Ackerman, Aaron Tanenbaum, and Allan Jay Tanenbaum.
