“Mike”, as he was known by many, was 70 years old and born in Millen, Georgia on November 14, 1949. Mike grew up in Waynesboro, Georgia and was a graduate of Waynesboro High School class of 1967. Mike continued his education at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and served as president for 1 year. Mike graduated from North Carolina State in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. Mike farmed for a few years after college and was also commissioned to the U.S. Army where he completed assignments to Alaska and also Desert Storm. Mike retired from the Army Reserves in 2009 as a Lieutenant Colonel. During that time, he also built a lifelong career in the Financial Services and Insurance industry which began in 1984. Mike had been an active member of NAIFA (National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors) since 1987 and held many positions, including past president. During his career in Financial Planning and the Insurance industry he obtained and maintained the following professional designations Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) , Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) , Registered Financial Consultant (RFC) , Certified Financial Planner (CFP) , Accredited Asset Management (AAMS), Certified Senior Advisor (CSA), Certified Estate Planner (CEP) , Retirement Plans Associate (RPA) , Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) and Mastered Registered Financial Consultant (MRFC). Mike was also an Investment Advisor Representative with Series 6, 7, 63 and 65 licensure. Mike was the Owner of Herrington Financial Services, Inc.; a Registered Investment Advisory Firm and First Choice Insurance Agency. Mike was a member of several other professional organizations and held several offices including past president in the following organizations: Augusta Exchange Club, Business Network International, Military Officers Association and The Diamond Club. Civic participation included active membership in Columbia and Richmond County Chamber of Commerce and a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America, achieving Eagle Scout and later Scout Master. Most recently Mike became a Court Appointed Special Advocate and spent his spare time helping children in need. Mike grew up attending St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and was currently an active member of The Episcopal Church of Our Savior in Martinez, GA with his wife, Susan. He enjoyed cooking and helping others in his spare time and was often referred to as a “Gentle Giant” and some referred to him as “Big M”. Mike was a devoted husband, father, brother, cousin and friend to many.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents Ann and Edwin “Buddy” Fletcher Herrington, Infant brother Edwin Fletcher Herrington, II, brother Edwin Fletcher Herrington III, sister Tyler Herrington Daniel and previous wife Brenda J. Herrington. Mike is survived by his wife of 13 years Susan A. Herrington, Sister, Rev. Kit Brinson. Children: Steven Edwin Herrington (Amanda), John Paul Herrington Pierce, Julie Herrington Deason, Brenda McGrath (Mike), Robert Michael Fox (Pam) Stephen William Rucker, Mary Katherine Clark (Andrew). Grandchildren: Genevieve Katherine Herrington, Abigail Marie Herrington, Reagan Grace Herrington, Lincoln James Herrington, Logan McKenzie Pierce, John Peyton Pierce, Jaydon Paul Pierce, Kevin Rucker Clark, Donald Andrew “Drew” Newell, Brittney Nicole Newell, Ashley Fox Roberts and Courtney Danielle Fox.
The Rev. Al Crumpton and Rev. Kit Brinson will officiate a private service at The Episcopal Church of Our Savior on July 22, 2020 @ 2pm. The service will be streaming live on The Episcopal Church of Our Savior Facebook Page and bulletin available as well. A memorial service with Military Honors will be conducted at a later date.
