

John Malone Dunaway, known affectionately as Johnny or Big John, passed away on May 17, 2024, at the age of 70. He was born on March 9, 1954, in Waynesville, NC, and most recently resided in Evans, GA.
John had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed various hobbies throughout his life. He found solace in outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing, connecting with nature in its purest form. Additionally, he loved antiquing alongside his beloved wife Geneva of 32 years creating lasting memories together.
Music was a significant part of John's life, and he appreciated a wide range of bands and artists. He had a diverse taste and enjoyed exploring different genres.
John's life was marked by remarkable achievements and dedicated service. In 1973, he joined the army, serving as a CID Senior Special Agent for 13 years and a Military Policeman for 11 years. During his honorable service, he was awarded a Bronze Star, a testament to his courage and dedication. Following retirement, John continued his career at CNN, where he played a pivotal role in creating an effective security posture for the network.
One of John's greatest joys was preparing delicious meals and hosting gatherings for his family and friends. He had a natural talent for cooking and cherished the moments spent around the table, sharing laughter and stories.
Spending time with his wife, family, and friends brought John immeasurable happiness. Whether it was in his favorite place in the world or simply in the comfort of their presence, he cherished every moment shared John also enjoyed playing a round of golf with his friends, relishing in friendly competition and the beauty of the sport.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Geneva M. Dunaway, daughter Elizabeth J. Dunaway Lyles, son-in-law Preston N. Lyles and, Grandson Robert Gatlin Dunaway, all of Colfax, La. His mother Ruth Dunaway (deceased) and brother, Walter Dunaway (deceased), Roger L. Martin (deceased), Wanda P. Martin, Keith Martin, Kayla Martin (Stephens) all of Simpson, La, will forever carry his legacy and memories in their hearts.
John Malone Dunaway will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, and a loyal friend. John's warm spirit, adventurous nature, and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
