Ann was born in Columbia, SC, to Willie and Dessie Derrick. She grew up surrounded by a large and close-knit extended family. They gathered frequently, sharing each other’s joys and burdens.
After graduation from Dreher High School in 1958, Ann went on to Columbia Hospital School of Nursing where she met dear lifelong friends including Roxanne Elliott.
Ann’s career led her to Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta, Ga. A friend in Augusta set her up on a blind date with a nice young man in the military, Mac Smith. Six weeks after that first date, Mac proposed and the wedding was three months later on February 24, 1968. Ann was Mac’s adoring wife for 57 years.
Ann was the most loving and patient mother to a daughter and son. She was always very proud of her family which eventually included six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her favorite thing to do was to spend time with her family, especially if it included going to one of her grandchildren’s sporting or special events, a game of Skip-Bo, puzzling, or a restaurant.
Ann was known for her sweet spirit—always generous, loving, and kind. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Ann is survived by her husband, Edmond M Smith; daughter, Mary Alice (Todd) Clark; son, Eddie (Keri) Smith; sister, Jean Derrick; sister, Betty (Griffin) Cupstid; sister-in-law, Peggy (Joe) Patterson; grandchildren, Morgan Clark, Kathryn (Joseph) Lesser, Mason Clark, Kennedy Smith, Katelyn Smith, and Anna Claire Smith; great grandchildren, Reece Lesser and Micah Lesser; and many nieces and nephews.
