Born on October 4, 1937, in Kabletown, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Charles William Popkins Sr. and Dorothy (Hough) Popkins Poston.
Charles proudly served his country in the United States Navy. During his time in service, he had the opportunity to travel and experience new places—a chapter of his life that ultimately led him to meet the love of his life, Mary “Leonard.” The two were united in marriage on April 23, 1960.
Charles is survived by his beloved daughters: Rebecca Blanchet and her husband, Paul; Mary Poole and her husband, Steve; Patricia Greenwalt and her husband, Donald; son-in-law, Travis Kretzer; his grandchildren: Chad, Adam, Brandon, Carol, David, Joshua, Steven, Briana, Audrianna, Cambra, Donald, Kirstyn, and Abigayle; 22 wonderful great-grandchildren, with one on the way; siblings: Betty Popkins; Gene Popkins and his wife, Marlene; and Donna Greenwalt and her husband, Frank.
Charles found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed playing darts, trying his luck with lottery games and scratch-offs, and spending peaceful days fishing. He was also an avid Sudoku puzzle master, and enjoyed watching game shows. Above all else, Charles cherished the time he spent with his family. Whether gathered for special occasions or everyday moments, he was happiest when surrounded by those he loved.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Popkins; his cherished daughter, Shirley Hall; and his siblings: Wayne, Nancy, Peggy, James, and Dorothy.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Rosedale Funeral Home in Martinsburg, West Virginia, on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the start of his funeral service at 12:00 p.m. Charles will be laid to rest next to his wife at Notre Dame Cemetery in Rhode Island.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wounded Warriors, at https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/, in honor of Charles.
