Joan Divine

Joan Elizabeth Divine, 85, of Shepherdstown, passed peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. Born on October 27, 1940, Joan was the beloved daughter of the late Robert Lee Penwell and Evelyn Elizabeth (Montgomery) Penwell.

Joan was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Divine Sr., with whom she shared a lifetime of memories, love, and devotion. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Pam Gesford; three beloved grandchildren; and her siblings Robert Penwell, Bill Penwell, Jeanette Mills, and Ruby Prince.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Cindy McCormick, Donna Underwood, Don Divine (Angel), David Divine, Joan Woodward, and Tracie McCormick (David). Joan’s legacy continues through her 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immeasurable joy to her life.

She is also survived by her loving sisters, Alice Derflinger, Ardella May, and Betty James, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory.

Joan was the heart of her family — a woman whose love was steady, selfless, and unconditional. She carried strength through every season of life and gave comfort freely to those around her. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and togetherness, and her greatest happiness came from spending time with the family she loved so deeply.

Those who knew Joan will remember her gentle spirit, caring heart, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved. Though her family’s hearts are broken, they find peace in knowing she is now reunited with loved ones gone before her and resting safely in the arms of the Lord.

Her memory will live on in every story shared, every family gathering, and every life she touched with kindness and grace.

Family and friends will be received at Rosedale Funeral Home on Monday, May 18, 2026 from 12pm until the time of the funeral service at 1pm. Interment will follow in Rosedale Cemetery.
