He was married to Mary Margaret Hay Meadows whose death occurred in 2000. They were wed on Sept. 12, 1948 in the First Christian Church where they remained active members with both serving in many capacities throughout the years.
Mr. Meadows is survived by his children Karen (Joe) Sanders of Flemingsburg, Diana (Jon) Staggs of Aberdeen, Jimmy, David (Lisa), Lisa (Rob) Ellis, Ashley all of Maysville, Jeff (Jennifer) of Harrodsburg, and Stephen of Kissimmee, Florida.
He is survived by 12 grandchildren, Tammy Newsom, Michael Sanders, Laura Staggs, Matthew (Amanda) Staggs, Christopher Meadows, Abby Meadows, Gregory Meadows, Miranda (Josh) Wellman, Melissa (Brad) Wiser, Brandon Bone, Nathan Meadows, and Caitlyn Meadows. He also leaves five great-grandchildren, Dustin Johnson, Nick Johnson, Gage Wellman, Alysa Meadows, and Lucille Wiser. He is also survived by a sister, Emma Reynolds of Maysville, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Dawn, two brothers Harry and Bobby, and a sister Mildred Ann.
He served as a cook in the United States Army during WWII where he cooked on troop trains and in army camps in Orlando, Florida; Camp Dix, New Jersey and Camp Crowder, Missouri. It was while serving at the latter where he often talked about eating a meal in the kitchen with then Vice President Harry Truman.
After his discharge from the army, he began working at Magee’s Bakery under Lesley Magee. From there he and Mary Margaret moved to Cincinnati to work at Ruble’s Baking Company. They later returned to Maysville where he was employed by the Manchester Baking Company as a bread baker. He also owned his own bakery on Pelham Street in the 1950’s. In 1958 he was hired as a route salesman for Cedar Hill Farms Dairy in Cincinnati where he delivered dairy products throughout the area until it closed in 1979.
In 1980 he had the opportunity to get back into the bakery business when he purchased The Donut shop in downtown Maysville. He operated it as Jim’s Donut Shop until his retirement in 1999. His love for baking never ceased as he made desserts for the Masonic Lodge of which he was a long-time member. He often made pies for friends during the year and especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
His family was always his first love and priority, but equally important was his dedication and love for his church. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian church where he was an Elder Emeritus, serving as past chairman of the Worship committee and the Property Committee. He was a member of the Adult Chapel Sunday School Class.
Many times throughout the years, he along with other members of his committees would have a pie sale to raise money for various projects for the church. 150 to as many as 600 pies at a time were made and sold to pay for things such as children’s choir robes, hymn books and youth group trips. He and Mary Margaret were much involved with their children in church activities. In 1968 a tradition began when the youth group would go on a fall retreat. He would go along to be the cook for the group and he did this for several years.
He will most be remembered by his family for his love for his wife, children and grandchildren and for his hard work ethic.
