Elizabeth Griffin was born on 22 July 1924 to Della Griffin and Giles Griffin. She was the youngest daughter out of seven siblings. Elizabeth grew up in Henryton, Maryland. Her work ethic and love for the church and family can be attributed to her mother and father.
She often spoke of how she had to feed farm animals and milk the cows before going to school. Elizabeth valued the Lord, education and hard work. She was a member of West Liberty Church. Her grandfather assisted in the building of the church.
Elizabeth married twice. Her first husband was Alvin Wright. Alvin was an Army Veteran and died tragically. She was a widow and a single parent, raising her eldest son, Horace Wright.
Elizabeth later met Monroe Johnson, they married in December of 1951. She gave birth to four more children; Etta, Bernard, Larry and Loretta.
She worked as a domestic engineer and caring for her children. On August 1, 1963 she entered the work force as a full time employee of Henryton State Hospital. She later joined Bishop Cummings Memorial Church. To support her family she later worked at the church. Elizabeth retired from Henryton on December 1, 1984. During her retirement she participated in making pottery and devoted time to her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling. One of her most memorable trips was a cruise with her family.
In 2010 later due to decline in health she moved to McDonough, Georgia with her oldest daughter who was in the military. In Georgia she was often referred to as Queen Elizabeth. She was active at the Heritage Senior Citizen Club and attended Avalon Church. Elizabeth traveled to the Holy Land Experience in Orlando, San Antonio and Athens. She has a niece that resides in Athens.
Elizabeth leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters: Etta Johnson Foster, Loretta Gaffney; son in law, Cable Foster; nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and a host of cousins and friends.
