Gilbert “Gib” Albert Butler, aged 84, passed away on November 6, 2024. He was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all that met him. Gilbert never knew a stranger and he had a unique gift in forming connections with others. He will be deeply missed by so many.
Gilbert was born on December 8, 1939 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Clarence and Mattie Mae Butler. He spent his formative years in Atlanta, Georgia graduating from Fulton High School in 1958. He joined the Navy and was a Plane Maintenance Captain on the carrier USS Saratoga. He also made the best decision in his life, marrying his sweetheart Patricia Mullins.
After his military career, Gilbert went to work for Eastern Airlines while attending school to become a certified A&P mechanic. At that time, he moved his family to Locust Grove, Georgia which now included his daughters Cindy and Sherri and two sons, Bert and David.
Gilbert loved all things aviation, but more than anything he loved his family. He was a devoted husband and father who often worked several jobs to provide for his growing family. He loved spending time with his family at get-togethers and coaching/cheering on his children at athletic events where he was usually the announcer. All of Locust Grove could hear him from the field.
Gilbert had a passion for people and everyone at the airport knew him despite the airport location. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication and passion. Gilbert had many airline stories including an opportunity to work on Elvis Presley’s plane, and he retired from American Airlines in 2003.
Gilbert would say the best decision of his life was giving it to Christ in his younger years and making sure that all his family members knew the Lord. He loved his church, First Baptist Locust Grove and worked faithfully in the kitchen for Family Night Supper.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Cindy, and his son in love Adriel. Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Patricia, his children Sherri (Adriel), Bert (Krissy), David (Wendy), grandchildren Melanie (Heath) Joseph (Loretta), Jacob (Tawny), Rachel (Jake), Michelle, Myles, Wyatt and Jackson. Step grandchildren Adriel (Esther) and Eric (Mona) and 19 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sat June 28, 2025 at First Baptist Church - Locust Grove.
Gilbert’s memory will be cherished by all he knew.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Samaritan’s Purse.
