Susan was born in Ashland, Ohio on October 18, 1954, the daughter of the late James E. Vines and Janet L. (Fulk) Vines. She graduated from Ashland High School and North Central Technical College as a registered nurse and received her Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina - Charlotte. She retired in June as the Director of Women’s Services at Piedmont Henry Hospital after a 45-year career in nursing that included bedside nursing specializing in high-risk obstetrics, education positions with Lamaze International and Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, and various leadership positions in hospital administration at medical centers in North Carolina, Delaware, Texas, Florida, and Georgia. She was a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nurses), Georgia Association of Nurse Leaders, among other professional organizations and served on multiple boards and special committees throughout her career. Susan enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends, gracing all she met with a sparkling smile and sunny disposition.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Donald W. Oswalt, father, James E. Vines, sister, Ann L. (Vines) Owings, and brother, William E. Vines. She is survived by her children, Matthew David Oswalt of Fuquay-Varina, NC and Elizabeth Anne (Oswalt) and Robert Zebrowski of Atlanta, GA. Also surviving are her mother, Janet (Fulk) Vines of Vero Beach, FL; sister, Lynn (Vines) and Chris Coy of Vero Beach, FL and brother and sister in-laws David and Arlene Oswalt of Naples, FL, Bill Owings of Mansfield, OH, and Jane Vines of Ashland, OH. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, Sara Oswalt and Martijn Middelplaats, Bryan Owings, Ross and Kayla Owings, Tyson and Lorena Vines, Steve and Abby (Vines) Gray, Kyle Coolman, Max and Maggie Coy, Arin and Ashley Coy, and Fritz and Paige Coy; and great nieces and nephews, Kirin, Avery, Giuliana, Liam, Kipton, Scarlett, Olivia, Paisley, and Parker.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, November 23 at Wesley Way United Methodist Church (150 John Wesley Way, McDonough, GA). In lieu of flowers the family suggests celebrating Susan’s lifelong passion for the health of mothers and babies by making a contribution in her memory to your local March of Dimes chapter, or to AWHONN’s ‘Every Woman, Every Baby’ initiative which supports lifelong learning for nurses, research that leads to improving nursing practice and patient care, and education and activities that provide information and resources for women and their families.
