Lonnie Edwin Horstman, of Woodway, Texas, passed away on July 25, 2023 at the age of 95.
Lonnie was born on March 16, 1928, to Fritz and Emma Horstmann in McGregor, Texas. He was a proud McGregor Bulldog where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball, and track. After graduating from McGregor High School, he worked for Texas Power and Light until his retirement in 1986. After retiring, he drove the special needs bus for Midway ISD where he earned the nickname “Big Lonnie”.
Lonnie married his high school sweetheart Peggy McNiel on July 7, 1949, in Moody, Texas. They had three sons: Larry, Steve, and Scott.
Lonnie enjoyed a lifetime of coaching youth baseball, football, and basketball teams. He was a high school football official and basketball referee for many years. He was a lifetime member of the NW Waco Optimist Club honoring their motto, “Friend of the Youth”.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, son Larry, granddaughter Amanda, and great granddaughter Braylee.
He is survived by his sons: Steve and wife Lorna of Woodway, TX, and Scott and wife Judy of Pearland, TX; grandchildren Kyle Horstman and wife Lindsay, Alicia Horstman, Jennifer Foreman, Ashley Etheredge and husband Stephen, Danny Horstman and wife Lauren, Lindsey Horstman, Jacob Rice and wife Leslie, Zane Rice and wife Emma, and Kendall Rice; great grandchildren Grant Horstman, Wyatt Plagens, and Colton Etheredge.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Cole Funeral Home, 1113 W. 5th Street, McGregor, TX from 6:00-8:00 pm.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, July 31, 2023, at the McGregor Cemetery on East Windsor Road.
