She is the daughter of deceased Thomas J Cummando and Dolores M Tworog and sister of the late Dorianne Buerman and Tommy J Cummando Jr.
Melissa is survived by her husband of 33 years, Owen Matthews; children, Nathan, Theresa, Timothy, Stephen, and Jason; sister, Tricia Cummando Eby (Michael); and her brother, Joseph Annunziata Sr. (Patti).
Melissa was known for her passion in teaching children and her selflessness in celebrating friends, coworkers, and family crowning milestones. A librarian at Henry Clay from 2013 to 2022, she taught each class uniquely for her students to foster a love of learning something new.
The family will host a wake on Tuesday, October 1 from 4-7pm at Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23116 and funeral mass Wednesday, October 2 at 11:00 am at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 105 S Snead St, Ashland, VA 23005.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation to support the Hanover Education Foundation, 200 Berkley Street, Ashland VA 23005.
