Russell was born in Hanover County, VA to Russell Dietrick Lowry, Sr. and Maude Anderson Lowry on December 12, 1939. As a young man, Russell served in the Virginia Air National Guard stationed in Amarillo, Texas before going to work at Bottled Gas Corp. of Virginia and SuperValu (formerly Richfood) where he made many lifelong friends.
A mechanic by trade, Russell was known for his ability to fix anything and his willingness to help anyone. He loved to work on cars and spent many years with his closest friends building (and occasionally driving) race cars on local tracks. But what Russell was most known for was his love of family, especially his wife Bettie. Married for 62 years and sweethearts for 67, Russell always referred to Bettie as his beautiful bride.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Russell D. Lowry, Sr. and Maude A. Lowry; sister, Shirley L. Thompson; and sister, Gloria L. Williams.

Lowry of Aylett, VA; children, Russell Dietrick Lowry, III, James Thomas Lowry, and Diane Marie Lowry; grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Lowry, Melissa Ann Lowry, and James Thomas Lowry, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Hailie Lowry Blackman, Michael Lowry, and Seth Isaac Lawrence; and sisters, Marion L.
