Frederick W. Blackwell, 79, of Medford, Ore. passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016. Fred grew up in Indiana and graduated from Indiana University Fred received his M.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California. He was a researcher at The Rand Corporation and later a professor of computer science at California State University in Sacramento. He also taught in Europe for Boston University. He did consulting for Shearson (Smith Barney) and was a registered Commodity Trading Advisor. Fred retired to Florence, Ore. and then Hendersonville, N.C. before coming to Medford. Fred was a Quiz Kid on the NBC Radio show in 1950. He enjoyed playing the piano and was later a pianist at Nordstrom and various restaurants. In retirement, one of his greatest pleasures was playing for other residents at the Rogue Valley Manor. His music best expressed Fred’s loving heart. He was a kind and gentle man. He will be remembered and greatly missed. Fred is survived by his sisters, Mary Beth Miller (Elkhart, Ind.) and Susan Townsend (Muncie, Ind.); his sons, Robert Blackwell (Alameda, Calif.) and David Blackwell (Lakewood, Calif.); his stepdaughter, Grace Parker (Sacramento, Calif.); his sister-in-law, Karen Montie (Millbrae, Calif.); his loving nieces, Alexandra and Gabrielle Au (Millbrae, Calif.) and by the last great love of his life, Maggie Hardman (Medford, Ore.). Fred was preceded in death by his father, Paul F. Blackwell; his mother, Ardis C. Blackwell; his infant sister, Carolyn Sue Blackwell; and his loving wife, Linda R. Blackwell. Services at Rogue Valley Manor will be announced at a later date.
