To Mr. Lumsden's family,

My sincerest condolences to you. Mr. Lumsden seemed to be part MacGyver (he seemed to have a solution to every problem a 7th grader could have) and part Magnum P.I. (he had an aura of coolness and leadership that everyone respected and admired. Plus, he had a killer mustache to back it up).

I was a fat, weird 7th and 8th grader that had Mr. Lumsden as my P.E. teacher in 1988 through 1990.  I was intimidated by his aura; the man had a sense of control and charisma that made every unruly and scared kid want to respect him. He cared about his students and he made sure you participated, wether you wanted to or not. He encouraged, motivated and believed in those students and I was lucky enough to understand that. 

I was never an athlete in middle school. It didn't matter to Mr. Lumsden. He preached the importance of staying active, sound nutrition and teamwork. I made friends with other kids who tormented me (again, fat kid at the time) but under Mr. Lumsden's coaching, we learned to work together. Under his coaching in his class for that time, we were all allies. 

Mr. Lumsden wouldn't let you make excuses; he didn't let your fear or insecurities stop you from just showing up and participating. And when you did something stupid (which 7th grade boys are destined to do), he'd set you back in line with humor. He respected his students. I'll never forget that. 

I've been talking about Mr. Lumsden and his legendary mustache for years. It was enviable. He looked like a movie star to me. And I've been talking about him all this last Summer as I now have a Mr. Lumsden mustache. Friends would say, "oh, how Tom Selleck!" or "Freddie Mercury vibes!". I'd correct them. I'd tell them about the coolest P.E. teacher I ever had, Mr. Lumsden. It was his mustache I was trying to go for.

Thank you, Mr. Lumsden, for teaching an insecure, chubby kid, about how to be a team player.

I just heard about Ken’s passing.  I am so sorry for your loss.  Way too young.  He taught me a lot- was so organized and the kids loved him.  He loved to tease them and it was special to get that kind of attention from him.  Everyone wanted to be in his class.   Lots of cherished memories.
