

Betty L. Matz, 87, passed away September 7, 2013, in Murfreesboro, TN. Mrs. Matz was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who dearly loved her family. She was deeply loved by her family and especially by her husband, Billy, who was a noted Memphis historian, business, civic and church leader. Betty and Billy had been married 60 years prior to his death five years ago. Betty was a strong Christian, having served as a Sunday School teacher for single college aged women for more than 15 years at Highland Heights Baptist Church, and as an interpreter for the deaf for Dr. Adrian Rogers at Bellevue Baptist Church. She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Carol Matz of Atlanta, Georgia, and Rusty and Cathy Matz of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; by four grandchildren, Beth, Daniel, Rachel, and Robert Matz, and by two great- grandchildren, Andrew and Katie Matz. Betty is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, James and Gloria Hilliard of Destin, FL; two nieces, Linda Hilliard of Destin and Gayle Belter of Memphis; her cousin, Earl and Barbara Becker of Tallahassee, FL, as well as a great-nephew and great-niece, Jack and Anne Belter. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, the funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Both visitation and the service will be in the Chapel of Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis.
