

Charlene Gravette Youree, 100, went to be with the Lord on December 31, 2024 in Memphis, TN. Charlene was born on February 21, 1924 in Wingo, Kentucky and grew up in Graves County, Kentucky. She was the eldest of three children of Velma Mullins Gravette and Ernest Leland Gravette. Charlene graduated from Fulgham High School in Kentucky. Charlene also graduated from Cosmetology School in Kentucky and worked as a cosmetologist for several years. Even to this day, Charlene has kept her cosmetology license renewed every year. In 1947, Charlene married the late William Howard Youree. They started their family and eventually settled in Memphis in 1960.
Charlene had a loving heart of kindness and was blessed with a sharp memory. She was a dedicated homemaker all her life and lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; chatting on the telephone with friends and family, snacking, and going through her many recipes to find that special dish to cook.
Charlene will always be remembered for her cooking. She was an excellent cook who loved southern recipes.
Her other interests included church work, gardening, and reading. One of her favorite activities was sitting on the deck with family at their Pickwick Lake cabin. Charlene enjoyed many reunions of her husbands WWII Army buddies in addition to the family vacations.
Charlene was a long time member of Highland Heights United Methodist Church. She was active with the United Methodist Women’s organization and led as a circle chairman. She was most proud of receiving Woman of the Year award in 2007 from the United Methodist Women’s organization at her church.
Charlene had one grandson, Brian, who was her heart and joy. She became his play partner as he grew up. Charlene loved to play games and cards with him. As Brian began playing sports, Charlene attended every game and cheered him on.
Life for “Nanny” as her family affectionately called her consisted of faith, family, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, William Howard Youree in 2010. Also preceding her in death is her brother, Glennon Gravette of Clarksdale, TN and her brother, Donald Gravette of Henderson, KY. Charlene is survived by her son, Ernie (Diane) Youree of Memphis, TN; one grandson, Brian (Karolina) Youree of Knoxville, TN and two great-grandchildren, Patrick and Alana Youree of Knoxville, TN.

A graveside service for Charlene will be held Monday, January 13, 2025 at 2:00 PM, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38119.
