Our beloved Charles Lewis Lovett was born February 10, 1935, in Memphis, TN and passed away peacefully at home on June 4, 2025, with his loving wife Martha by his side. They had been married just shy of 68 years.
He served in the United States Army for three years and for most of that time he was stationed in Alaska as a radio specialist. Charley received a bachelor’s degree from Memphis State University, and was a lifelong Tiger fan, holding season football tickets for many years.
Charley had a long career in sales, ending in hydraulic parts at Franklin Engineering. His customers were so fond of him that the company convinced him to stay on part time to serve key accounts until he was 75.
He was a long-term parishioner and Eucharistic minister at Holy Rosary Catholic Church as well as a member of the Holy Rosary Men’s Club. Always loving basketball, he found his calling as a coach at Holy Rosary for 23 years. Respected by all his players, our Dad was honored to be called “Coach Lovett”. He and Martha enjoyed daily Mass and volunteering. They fed the hungry, visited the sick and homebound, often taking communion and worked with St. Vincent de Paul.
He loved baseball, was a lifelong New York Yankees fan and an usher at Memphis Redbirds games. With a love for travel, Charley and Martha visited Italy, Spain, Austria, France and Portugal on several great Catholic pilgrimages. They enjoyed cruises to Alaska, Bermuda, and several out of Cape Canaveral with their Florida Grandchildren. He put up with sand and sun, traveling with his Memphis Grandchildren to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL for many wonderful vacations. To them, he was lovingly called “Bopy”.
Charley leaves behind his wife, Martha, sister-in-law Nancy Biggs, brother-in-law Alvin (Mary Ann) Rapp, daughters Leigh (Greg) Barbour, Cynthia Singler, and Laura (Tom) Bullion, grandchildren Joseph (Melanie) Burke, Matt Singler, Bailey Barbour, Jenny (Haden) Janda, Katie Singler, Andrew Barbour, Anna Barbour, Elizabeth (Bradley) Shelley and great grandchildren Brady Williams, Rook Janda, and Charles Janda.
Visitation will be Monday, June 9th at 10:00 am and funeral mass immediately following at 11:00 am, both at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 4851 Park Avenue in Memphis, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorials to be made to your favorite charity.
